1JB read and wrote book reviews at their INSPiRE workshop today.

Class 1JB spent the morning with 24 of their parents reading and writing book reviews together. The parents were very impressed with finding out different ways to help their child with their reading at home to make it a fun and exciting time. Look how engaged everyone was at the workshop.

The parents said the following about what they found most interesting in the workshop.

“I enjoyed listening to my son and asking him questions. Shall continue at home with this”.

“Listening to my son telling me what he liked about the book and sharing the story”.

“Getting together with all the other mums and teachers. Tips on reading are quite inspiring and gives  you lots of other ideas on reading when talking to other mums.

Working with their parents is also a really fun time for the children, as you can read below.

Edward said, ” I read Duck in the Truck with my mum. After you had to draw a picture”.

Madison said, ” I readed a book with my nan and the we writted what the story was about – Tom Rabbit”.

Regan said, ” We picked a book, put your name, date, title and author and then you had to write what bit you liked and then you had to draw a picture about what you liked”.

and

Sarina said,” I was reading a book, Jennifer Jones Won’t Leave Me Alone, with my mum and dad. I was writing about the story and I draw a picture”.

Reading and playing games with class 2NB

At today’s INSPiRE workshop parents from 2NB and their children joined Miss Brewster and Mrs Davis for a morning of fun, whilst at the same time learning how they can work in partnership with school  to help their child at home with their reading.

As the slides below show everyone had a busy time sharing books and asking questions about the text and playing word games together. The comments from the parents show how much they enjoyed coming into school and learning alongside their child.Read what they found the most interesting about today.

“Interaction with my child and understanding the requirements needed to progression”.

“Finding out what levels your child is currently at and finding out more questioning techniques”.

“What kind of questions to ask when reading the book”.

These children also enjoyed it too.

“Me and my mum read a book. The book was called Charlie and Lola and the my mum had questions, she said,”Which bit did you like ?” and I said,” I like the end bit”.

“My dad read books with me. He played a word game and then Snakes and Ladders and another was a difficult game and another was an easy game and then we read another book and then it was break time”.

“I was playing Snakes and Ladders to get our vocabulary better with my mum. I read a book with my mum and she asked  questions about the book, about  a magician and a dragon”. 

“I read 3 books with my dad. We had a little game, if you know the words you have to roll the dice”.

Positive Parenting Course.

On Tuesday 17th January 2012, a group of 15 parents met with tutor Sheila Ross, from ‘Happy Families’ to begin a 5 week course – Positive Parenting. During the session parents had opportunities to chat with each other over a cup of tea or coffee and work together on the course booklet, looking at the 1st week’s theme, ‘What children really need’.

Over the next 4 weeks the group will look at the following topics :-

  • Developing Emotional Security
  • Setting Loving Limits
  • Keeping Children Safe
  • Problem Solving

Family Learning Room.

Today’s workshop was held in our new Family Learning Room, previously used as a classroom by Year 5 before they moved into the new buildings at the start of term.

In future,  all courses  will be held in this room where we hope parents and other family members  will feel comfortable  to learn in pleasant and quiet surroundings, but still be part of our school.

Future courses include:-

  • Promoting Positive Parenting.
  • INSPiRE Workshops for Key Stage 1, Reception and Nursery children.
  • Maths workshop for Year 1 and 2 parents.
  • Information sessions run by the school nurse.

Check out the BLOG and notice boards in the school reception area  for dates and times of these events.
